JUNE 4th, TUE - WISE: Women Innovating Sound Experience
WISE: In Waves -- a bi-monthly series of women, non-binary and queer identified artists working with experimental sound and media
ÉMU (Maria Takeuchi) is a multi-instrumental composer and audiovisual artist based in Brooklyn, originally from a small town in Japan. ÉMU creates sonic and visual poems, merging organismic soundscapes with generative art and illuminating objects inspired by nature. Using piezo microphones attached to wood bark wound with guitar strings and porcelain bowls carefully tuned with water measurements, she plays and conducts the sound objects with a delicate yet intentional focus. The subtle sound textures are created solely with touches by hand, stones, leaves, and shells on the handmade instruments, processed with modular synthesizers for the added aesthetic atmosphere.

Luc Vitk (Lucie Vítková) is a composer, improviser, and performer (accordion, hichiriki, synthesizer, harmonica, voice, and dance) from the Czech Republic, living in New York. During their studies of composition at Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno (CZ), they have been visiting scholar at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague (NL), California Institute of the Arts in Valencia (USA), Universität der Künste in Berlin (D), Columbia University in New York (USA) and at New York University. Their compositions focus on sonification (compositions based on abstract models derived from physical objects), while in their improvisation practice, Lucie works with the characteristics of discrete spaces through the interaction between sound and movement. In Lucie’s recent work, they are interested in the social-political aspects of music in relation to everyday life and in reusing trash to build sonic costumes and instruments.
